"As the Regional Director for Romania, attending the Document Interoperability Initiative event in London helped me tremendously to broaden my vision over the issue of document interoperability. As a result of the London event, I am committed towards introducing the audience in this part of the world to the issue of document interoperability and raise the awareness on the related issues."
"Microsoft's transparency in documenting the details of how Office has implemented ODF and Open XML helps all implementers improve interoperability with Office.  We look forward to continuing to work with them on improving the interoperability of our products, and we encourage other implementers to participate as well."

November 12 2009

Brussels, Belgium

The most recent DII (Document Interoperability Initiative) Workshop was held in Brussels at the Microsoft Executive Briefing Center (EBC) on Thursday, November 12, 2009. The workshop featured a variety of presentations by document format experts from standards bodies, private industry, and public-sector organizations. Presentation topics included document validation strategies (for both ODF and Open XML documents), online validator and document test library projects, ODF interoperability, conversion tools, and Office 2010's use of MCE (Markup Compatibility and Extensibility) as defined in ISO/IEC 29500, Part 3. There were also demonstrations of various tools and techniques, including document signing with the Belgian eID card, the Office-o-tron online validator, the PLANETS project, and the latest release of Package Explorer.

Roundtable discussions were held in the afternoon, allowing participants to discuss topics raised in the presentations, as well as other ideas and perspectives related to document format interoperability. Participants included members of SC34 WG1/WG4/WG5/WG6, the OASIS ODF and OIC TCs, ODF and Open XML implementers, and others.
