The first Document Interoperability technical lab at the Microsoft/Novell joint interoperability lab in Cambridge, MA. Attendees included Novell, Nuance, DataViz, Quickoffice, and Mark Logic, vendors who have implemented standard file formats in their products. The lab kicked off with a roundtable discussion about how we as a community can work together to solve common interoperability scenarios, including the developing of tools, test suites, and templates for cross-format translation.
Craig Kitterman's Interoperability Community Blog
Some of the questions that we discussed were:
-
What document interoperability issues exist with your product today?
-
Where and how should we collaborate as a community to solve issues?
-
What tools, test suites, sample document libraries etc. will enable developers to better implement open standards-based formats?
-
What types of templates should be created that can be optimized for interoperability across formats?
-
Where are customers demanding document format interoperability?
During this session, we also tested document format interoperability in a variety of scenarios, including taking content from paper documents to a variety of mobile platforms using Open XML.
